Let's get to know Colares, a very special wine region just outside Lisbon where, because of the deep, sandy soils, the phylloxera blight that destroyed 70-80% of European vineyards in the late 1800s didn't affect the region's vines. Viúva Gomes is living history, with wines that represent this historic, sandy AF wine region with big, fat, fruity aplomb. This red is a field blend of three plots planted to ramisco, molar, castelão, touriga nacional and tinta miúda. It was aged in big chestnut and mahogany barrels for 10 months. It's Colares in a glass: dark fruit, salty, meaty, ferrous, balsamic and not to be missed.
