I always loved the red fruits and exotic frankincense spice of Bairrada baga, and always loved the ethereal quality of Niepoort baga. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhen it grows on the clay-limestone soil of Bairrada, it truly is one of the finest red grape varieties in the world: \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eheaven-scented and capable of decades' ageing. This 2018 wine, made under the guidance of Sergio Silva and Miguel Silva (unrelated), was aged for two years in used 500l Burgundy barrels and a further two years in bottle. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv title=\"Page 1\" class=\"page\"\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"layoutArea\"\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"column\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe grapes are from three biodynamically farmed vineyards on Dirk Niepoort’s Quinta de Baixo estate. Quinta de Montarro, Quinta de Lagoa and Bezerreiro (pure Poeirinho clone baga vines aged 100+). Average vine age 40-60 years old. It's a fresh, chillable red with the addition of a small amount of aromatic torontel (in the muscat family).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe grapes were sourced from very old vines from coastal vineyards in the Itata Valley sub-regions of Trehuaco (país) and Coelemu (torontel); in both cases, dryfarmed, ungrafted bush vines planted on steep granite slopes. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe país underwent semi-carbonic fermentation with light extraction. It was matured in steel tank for about 10 months. The torontel was fermented with skins and matured in a single tinaja (amphora), also for about 10 months. After maturation the two were blended and bottled with a small addition of sulphur.
